If you are planning on asking someone for a significant gift, consider asking him or her in person. A personal appeal is one of the most effective ways of asking someone to support your effort.
Make sure the time is right. Consider inviting that person to lunch, your treat.
Practice what you will say a couple of times before you actually do it.
When you meet with your contributor tell him or her what you are doing and how much it means to you.
Then look them the person straight in the eye and ask for his or her support. Ask for a specific amount you would like him to give. Aim high. If you ask for more than what he is able to give, he will give what he can. If you ask for less then what he is able to give, he will give you that lesser amount.
The most important thing to remember is to ask and then be quiet. Do not talk. Do not apologize or make excuses. Remember, you are not asking for yourself but for the fight against cancer. They will be impressed that you have the courage to ask them in this way. People like to be perceived as successful and asked for a significant contribution. You will be amazed with the results. |
