Cure on Wheels weekend officially begins with an opening ceremony, which takes place Friday evening at Saint Leo University (SLU) in Saint Leo. It is in conjunction with rider check-in and is intended to be a time of meeting with new friends, connecting with old ones and being inspired by our speakers.
For many cyclists, the Cure on Wheels begins on Friday afternoon when they make their way to their official starting location. For many volunteers, the weekend starts on Wednesday or Thursday before the event with set up responsibilities at one of the major sites or waterstops.
The ride begins Saturday morning at 6:45 a.m. at SLU, with both routes diverging and finishing the day on Saturday afternoon at SLU. Volunteers are stationed at waterstops every 20 or so miles along the routes to support the riders, prepare and serve food, park bikes, and take care of any medical and mechanical needs. AT SLU, riders celebrate the end of a hard day of cycling with live music, an all-you-can-eat buffet, and a well-earned 15-minute massage.
On Saturday evening, one-day riders return to their homes. Although some two-day riders spend Saturday night “off campus,” most have overnight accommodations at SLU.
Sunday at SLU begins with reveille at 5:00 a.m. and an early morning breakfast served by Cure on Wheels volunteers. Most riders are on the road by 6:45 a.m. and many volunteers have started their day’s work at 4:30 a.m.!
On Sunday afternoon, volunteers greet and provide sustenance for the cyclists finishing at SLU. If you are interested in volunteering for any part of the weekend, please sign up on our site or send an email info@cureonwheels.org. |
